National Symposium on Responsible Tourism 16th December 2006, Bangalore

The main objective of this one-day meeting was to bring together Indian tourism's stakeholders to explore and agree on mechanisms to make Responsible Tourism the way forward for a destination like India. This symposium also served as a prelude to organising the 2nd International Conference on Responsible Tourism as a follow up to the Cape Town Declaration of August 2002. Read more..

Kerala workshop on Responsible Tourism, 02-03 Februry 2007

1. To create a space for discussion, sharing of experiences and exchanging of views among all stakeholders in tourism on the concept of responsible tourism and thereby define its elements as best suited to the context of Kerala

2. To arrive at broad consensus on the need to work further to nuance and detail ideas and practices of responsibility in the various sub-sectors and among the diverse stakeholders involved in tourism in Kerala

3. To discuss strategies, practices, tools, frameworks and measures across sub- sectors to facilitate greater responsibility in tourism in the state

4. To formulate a working group / task force that would take forward the discussions emerging out of the consultation

2nd International conference on Responsible Tourism in Destinations, Kerala 21-24 March 2008

Objectives of the conference:

  • Review progress towards Responsible Tourism around the world since 2002, including initiatives in destinations as well as those of hotels and tour operators.
  • Share good practices and experiences of successes and failures from destinations both developed and developing.
  • Discuss how tourism can contribute to local economic development and poverty reduction.
  • Consider how the environmental impacts can be effectively managed by the industry.
  • Evaluate the experiences of managers, tour operators and hoteliers in India who have undertaken activities to deepen responsible tourism.
  • Reflect on Kerala's experience of working towards being a Responsible Tourism destination and to share it internationally.
  • Arrive at a common declaration on the state of the responsible tourism movement in the world that will charter the way forward.
